GLOSSARY
STUDENTS

Below is a list of terms commonly used throughout this website.

ANNUAL DEDUCTIBLE

Annual deductible is the amount of covered expense that must be paid by you, each policy year (September 1 – August 31), before benefits become payable under the Plan.

The following is how the $100 deductible would be applied to prescription drug expenses:

You submit a claim for you and your eligible dependents of $150 in eligible prescription drug expenses in February, the Plan would reimburse you $50.

  • Eligible expense - $150
  • Deductible - $100
  • Plan pays - $50

Subsequently, in June, you submit another claim of $125 in eligible prescription drug expenses, the Plan would reimburse you the full $125, as your annual deductible has already been met.

APPROVED HOSPITAL

The health care facility must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Legally termed a hospital,
  • Open at all times,
  • Offers in-patient accommodation,
  • Has a staff of one or more physicians available at all times, and
  • Continuously provides 24-hour nursing by graduate registered nurses.

CHILD

Is defined as your child(ren) which may include your step-child(ren), adopted child(ren) or foster child(ren) who:

  • is unmarried,
  • is under 21 years of age,
  • is financially dependent on you for support and maintenance, and
  • resides with you.

IMPORTANT!

If you have eligible dependents you must apply for family coverage within 31 days of your dependents first being eligible.  If you don't, you will not be eligible for family coverage later.

 

ELIGIBLE DEPENDENTS

Your eligible dependents include your Spouse and your eligible Child(ren). Any person who is also covered as a student under the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan is not eligible to be covered as a dependent.

ELIGIBLE STUDENT

You are eligible for coverage under the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan if you are:

MISHIP Identification Card

When you enroll in the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan, you are issued a MISHIP Identification Card by Aon Hewitt. This card verifies your coverage under the Plan.

MANITOBA HEALTH COVERAGE

Refers to health coverage provided under the Manitoba provincial government health insurance plan. Please see details regarding this plan at http://gov.mb.ca/health/index.html

MAXIMUM BENEFITS

  • The maximum benefit payable from the Plan is $600,000 per insured person, per calendar year, for all expenses combined.
  •  The maximum benefit payable as result of the same condition is $600,000 during a person's lifetime.

Conditions are considered the same when:

  • they exist simultaneously; or
  • they arise from the same or related.

OPT OUT CLAUSE

Under the following circumstances, a student may choose not to participate in the Plan:

  • The student is sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and health insurance coverage is included in the agency's support,
  • The student holds a scholarship which provides health insurance coverage, or
  • The student is covered under a provincial government health insurance plan.

To qualify for this exemption, the student must provide documentation of health insurance coverage to their school, and he/she must complete and sign a Declaration of Alternative Health Coverage Form (PDF).

PARTICIPATING INSTITUTE OF LEARNING

  • A school which teaches Kindergarten to Senior 4 (as listed on the Government of Manitoba website "Schools in Manitoba"), university, or college, and
  • Has agreed to the mandatory enrollment of Eligible Students into the Plan, and
  • Has been accepted as a participant under the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan.

PICTURE IDENTIFICATION

Means a valid:

  • passport,
  • driver's license, or
  • student identification card

PLAN

Refers to the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan or MISHIP.

POLICY YEAR

The policy year for the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan is the 12-month period of September 1 to August 31.

SPOUSE

Means the person to whom you are:

  • legally married, and
  • resides with you.

Common Law Spouse

Your eligible spouse may also include your common law spouse with whom you are living in a conjugal relationship.

  1. If you have a common law spouse when you first enroll in the Manitoba International Students Health Insurance Plan
  • he/she will be eligible for coverage as your spouse, on the same date that your coverage becomes effective
  • but he/she does not begin living with you, in Canada, until a later time, he/she will be eligible for coverage at the time they begin living with you in Canada if you declared your pre-existing common law relationship when you initially applied for insurance. Once your common law spouse has arrived, please contact the International Students office at your school to convert to family coverage
  1. If you wish to add a common law spouse after you are first eligible under the Plan
  • there will be a one-year waiting period from the date you notify Aon Hewitt in writing, before your common law spouse is eligible for coverage
